NYU transfer application advice
Keep your grades up, even as you work on your transfer applications. NYU transfer applicants' grades from their prior institution are almost certainly the most important element of their applications to NYU.
Submit standardized test scores. You're a less risky bet for a college if you provide more information about yourself. If you think you could have gotten a better ACT score or SAT score, you could re-take the test, but don't do test prep at the expense of your college coursework or getting strong transfer applications together.
Get organized. You're probably considering colleges other than NYU too. The transfer application process requires keeping track of the application deadline and transfer requirements for each college. It's so easy to let something slip through the cracks. In my online course on transfer admission, I offer you the spreadsheet column headings you need to keep on top of everything.
Get compelling recommendation letters. These letters should come from a college professor, not someone who knew you in high school, and focus primarily on your college-level academic performance. Why? Colleges want transfer students who can perform in college classes, so your high school abilities matter less. For more specific suggestions on how to get appealing recommendation letters, take my online course on transfer admission.
Write the right personal statement. There are topics that will make you look like a sure bet for a transfer student and topics that will scare the NYU transfer admissions board off. Find out what topics competitive applicants write about in my online course on transfer admission.
Demonstrate interest in NYU in particular. Your expressed interest in the college, shown in your essays with lots of little college-specific details, will make the admission office think you're likely to enroll if admitted -- which improves your odds. Know what your family can afford. At many colleges, including NYU, financial aid for transfer students is less generous. Not all programs at NYU offer financial aid to transfer students.
Take advantage of NYU's programs for community college students. NYU offers certain pathways in for community college students in and near New York City. If you go to a community college, check to see if your school is on this list.
